Montana high school flag football is experiencing rapid growth, with 17 teams participating in this year’s state tournament. Lockwood athletic director Mike Erickson has emerged as a key figure in the sport, helping schools navigate the rules and logistics of flag football. Despite the growing pains, the sport is creating a culture of cooperation and community, with fans showing up in large numbers to support their teams.
Erickson, who has taken on the role of a pseudo-commissioner, believes that flag football is here to stay and is providing a unique opportunity for girls to participate in a sport that is different from traditional offerings. He highlights the enthusiasm and passion that players display on the field, stating that the smiles on their faces make all the hard work worthwhile.
As the sport continues to expand and become more competitive, Erickson hopes to maintain the current culture of cooperation and patience among coaches, officials, and players. He sees the potential for flag football to positively impact other sports in the state and is optimistic about its future.
While the sport currently receives outside funding, there is a possibility of it becoming an MHSA-sanctioned sport in the future. This decision would entail considerations about governance and funding, but Erickson believes that the growth and success of flag football will continue, bringing joy and opportunity to student-athletes across Montana.
The Girls Flag Football State Championship is set to take place on Thursday and Friday at Montana State’s Bobcat Stadium, featuring teams from various schools across the state. The championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday under the lights at the stadium.
