A new report by a House task force investigating an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a July 13 campaign rally found a lack of planning and coordination between the Secret Service and local law enforcement. The report, based on interviews with law enforcement, documents, and a public hearing, revealed missed opportunities to apprehend the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks. The report stated that fragmented communication allowed Crooks to evade law enforcement, climb onto the roof of a building, and fire eight shots at the rally, resulting in one death and three injuries. The Secret Service was criticized for not properly planning and coordinating with local law enforcement agencies ahead of the rally. The report detailed the lack of coordination among law enforcement agencies on the day of the rally and revealed that the Secret Service did not participate in briefings held by other agencies. The task force is still conducting interviews of federal officials and investigating the alleged assassination attempt against Trump at his golf course in Florida in September. The panel has requested information and records from the Secret Service, FBI, and ATF. The Secret Service has not yet responded to requests for comment on the report.
