Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for governor in North Carolina, is facing backlash after reports emerged that he made lewd and inflammatory comments on a pornography website over a decade ago. Despite the report, Robinson has vowed to continue his campaign and denied the allegations, calling them “tabloid trash.”
Robinson’s comments included calling himself a “black NAZI,” expressing support for bringing back slavery, and sharing sexually graphic stories. Some Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Ted Budd, have called his comments “disgusting,” while others, such as Rep. Richard Hudson, are urging him to address the allegations directly.
The North Carolina Republican Party has stood by Robinson, stating that the allegations are part of an effort to demonize him. However, Democrats have criticized him as unfit for office, with Rep. Jeff Jackson saying the comments made him “sick to his stomach.” The Democratic Governors Association has labeled Robinson as “unhinged” and “dangerous.”
Robinson has previously made controversial remarks about abortion, transgender rights, and public school teachers, which have been used against him by his opponents. Despite these challenges, Robinson has received support from former President Donald Trump, who has praised him as the next governor of North Carolina.
Opinions are divided on whether Robinson should drop out of the race, but if he were to do so, the North Carolina GOP would name a replacement candidate. However, with ballots already printed and early voting underway, it may be too late to make any changes. The election is set to take place on November 5, with Robinson trailing behind his Democratic opponent, Josh Stein, in the polls.
