Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion during Thursday’s game against the Buffalo Bills after colliding head-first with a Bills safety. Tagovailoa’s teammates immediately called for trainers, but he was able to walk off the field under his own power. In the locker room, he was reported to be conscious, awake, alert, and had full movement in his extremities. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Tagovailoa was in good spirits but did not provide a timeline for his return.
This is not the first time Tagovailoa has suffered a concussion. He had two concussions in the 2022 season, which led to a controversy about the NFL’s concussion protocol. Despite having considered retirement after his previous concussions, Tagovailoa decided to keep playing after consulting with a doctor, with his parents supporting his decision.
Tagovailoa, in his fifth season with the Dolphins, was drafted in 2020 and led the NFL in passing yards last season. The team signed him to a lucrative contract in July. Skylar Thompson, who replaced Tagovailoa during Thursday’s game, expressed his concern for his teammate, saying he cares about Tagovailoa as a person more than a player.
The Dolphins will have to wait for further evaluation to determine when Tagovailoa can return to play. Hopefully, he will recover fully from this concussion and be back on the field soon.
