Marcel Brown, a man wrongfully convicted of murder in the 2008 shooting of a 19-year-old man in Chicago, has been awarded $50 million in damages, the largest payout of its kind in US history. Brown, who served 10 years in prison before being released in 2018, was found to have been coerced into a false confession by police officers who fabricated evidence against him.
During a two-week trial at the US District Court in Chicago, a jury determined that Brown had been subjected to abuse and mistreatment during his interrogation, including being locked in a room for over 30 hours, denied food, and prevented from contacting a lawyer or his mother. Despite his requests for legal representation, Brown was threatened with long imprisonment if he did not confess to the crime.
Following his release, Brown expressed his relief and stated that he had been unjustly targeted by law enforcement. His legal team, Loevy & Loevy, commended the jury’s decision to hold the police accountable for their actions.
