Travelers embark on road trips for the extended Labor Day weekend

Labor Day weekend is expected to be busy with airports, highways, beaches, and theme parks packed as Americans mark the unofficial end of summer. The Transportation Security Administration predicted screening over 17 million people during the holiday period, with Friday being the busiest day. Flight delays were common, with airlines canceling over 200 flights, leading to more than 4,500 delays. Despite this, many travelers have heeded experts’ advice to travel early. Weather-related flight delays are expected in parts of the U.S. over the weekend.

Gasoline prices have decreased compared to last year, while airfares have also dropped as the peak summer travel season ends. Travel metasearch site Kayak CEO, Steve Hafner, noted that airfares are now more affordable. The best time to hit the road is early morning or late evening, with traffic expected to be heaviest on Saturday and Monday. The TSA anticipates screening over 2.86 million people on Friday, ensuring security lines are manageable. American Airlines is operating numerous flights during the weekend.

In case of flight delays or cancellations, travelers are advised to check their flight status, reach out to the airline for rebooking options, and keep receipts for out-of-pocket expenses. Airlines are required to provide refunds for canceled flights, but cash compensation is not guaranteed. For a smoother travel experience, travelers are encouraged to leave early, watch the weather, and avoid checking bags. Being patient and understanding with customer service representatives is also key to a stress-free travel experience.
