Video footage from body camera captures exchange leading up to Akron police officer fatally shooting man inside suspected stolen vehicle

Police in Akron, Ohio, released body camera and security video showing the fatal shooting of Michael Jones on August 17. Jones, suspected of stealing a U-Haul box truck, was shot by an Akron police veteran after a struggle ensued during an attempt to arrest him at a gas station. The officer, who has been placed on paid administrative leave, has not been publicly identified. The incident occurred after officers were investigating a stolen vehicle that U-Haul reported as stolen when it was not returned on time.

The body camera footage shows the officer approaching Jones in the U-Haul, attempting to arrest him, and a struggle ensuing as Jones tries to drive away. The officer fires two shots at Jones’ side, ultimately killing him. Officials administered first aid, but Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered on or near Jones after the shooting. Following conflicting witness reports, the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation, and internal investigations are being carried out by the police department.

Jones’ children, represented by an attorney, expressed devastation over the incident, questioning the officers’ use of force. They are seeking justice and urging the city of Akron to hold the officers accountable. Mayor Shammas Malik stated a commitment to open discussions about public safety to strengthen community trust. The case will be reviewed by the state attorney general’s office and the Summit County Grand Jury once investigations are complete.
