A second former Memphis police officer, Emmitt Martin, is expected to change his not guilty plea in connection to alleged civil rights violations that resulted in the beating death of Tyre Nichols. A change of plea hearing is scheduled for Martin in front of U.S. District Judge Mark Norris. Another former officer, Desmond Mills Jr., previously pleaded guilty to federal charges of excessive force and obstruction of justice and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. Nichols died in the hospital several days after a traffic stop where several Memphis police officers were captured on camera kicking, punching, and hitting him with a baton. Other officers involved have pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges related to Nichols’ death. Please check back for updates on this developing story.
