A storm south of Cuba is expected to become a tropical storm by late Saturday as it targets Florida’s west coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Known as Tropical Depression Four, it is likely to strengthen and potentially be named Tropical Storm Debby. The storm was located 75 miles south of Caibarien, Cuba and is projected to move north into the Gulf of Mexico. The National Weather Service issued a tropical storm warning for the west coast of Florida and a storm surge watch for areas like Tampa Bay. The storm may bring 1 to 4 feet of storm surge flooding, 4 to 8 inches of rain, and up to 12 inches in some areas. It could be the fourth named storm of the North Atlantic hurricane season ahead of the average schedule. Despite a relatively quiet season so far, this storm is expected to bring strong winds, flooding, and heavy rainfall to the region.
