Montana Community Mourns Pilot Commissioner in Fatal Plane Crash
Yellowstone County Commissioner John Ostlund, 73, tragically lost his life in a plane crash on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred when Ostlund’s 1969 Cessna 172 collided with power lines near Billings, causing the aircraft to flip and catch fire. The Federal Aviation Administration’s preliminary report stated the circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear.
Ostlund, appointed in 2003, was a dedicated public servant, having served over 20 years in various capacities, including as president of the Montana Association of Counties. His contributions to the community were widely recognized, particularly his role in renovating MetraPark arena.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte expressed condolences, calling Ostlund a vital part of Yellowstone County. Senator Steve Daines remembered him as a devoted leader, while Democratic City Councilman Bill Kennedy highlighted Ostlund’s willingness to find compromises despite political differences. Tributes poured in from officials across the political spectrum, underscoring his impact on local governance.
Ostlund is survived by his wife, Kristie, their five children, and grandchildren. The community now faces the task of appointing a replacement until the upcoming November election, as they reflect on the loss of a dedicated public servant and beloved figure.
