Ian Andersen, an American creator known as “ridewithian” on TikTok, has shared his global biking adventures with 43,300 followers. His recent 29-day journey through Iran took a daunting turn when Iranian-Israeli conflicts escalated. Initially determined to continue exploring Iran, Andersen’s course shifted dramatically after his guide, Reza, warned him, “I can no longer protect you,” which prompted Andersen to reassess his safety.
As unrest intensified, the U.S. State Department urged citizens to leave Iran immediately. Andersen documented his experiences, highlighting both the hospitality of Iranians and the pressing reality of escalating violence. He had enjoyed positive interactions and local cuisine, but the tone of his videos darkened as conflict erupted. Andersen’s journey was impacted by Iran’s internet blackout, complicating communications and travel plans.
With conversations abounding about border safety and travel requirements, Andersen was ultimately able to exit through Azerbaijan, thanks to Reza’s assistance. “I probably wouldn’t be here talking if it weren’t for Reza,” he expressed gratefully in a video update.
Similar experiences unfolded for U.K.-based TikTok influencers Nadia Akhtar and Irfan Aziz, who were also in Iran during the strikes. Realizing the precariousness of their situation, they hurriedly devised an exit plan with their guide, Ali. Their emotional farewell at the Turkish border highlighted the human cost of such conflicts, emphasizing that many locals lack the freedom to escape violence.
Both Andersen and the couple emphasized their gratitude for safe passage while recognizing the suffering of those who remain without options in Iran and Israel amid the ongoing turmoil.
