Montana Football’s Asher Croy Enters Transfer Portal

MISSOULA — In a surprising turn of events, Montana football junior Asher Croy has announced his entry into the transfer portal, marking yet another significant roster change for the Grizzlies. Croy, who recently transitioned from linebacker to running back, made the announcement via social media on Wednesday, expressing gratitude for his four years at the University of Montana.

At 6-foot and 225 pounds, Croy showcased considerable talent during the Grizzlies’ spring game, adding depth to an already crowded running back position. Previously, he garnered attention in high school for his standout performance in Bozeman’s 2019 State AA championship, where he rushed for 333 yards and three touchdowns. After redshirting in 2020, Croy primarily played linebacker and was recognized as the defensive scout team player of the year in 2022, though he only participated in one game without recording any statistics.

Croy’s announcement came on the heels of several other transfers from the Grizzlies. Quarterback Sam Vidlak also declared for the portal, following a season where he completed 62.9% of his passes, while defensive backs Jelani Warren and Lamar Campbell joined him in seeking new opportunities. In total, seven players have entered the transfer portal since the conclusion of spring camp.

The Grizzlies continue to face roster changes, as starting defensive end Kale Edwards has drawn interest from multiple FBS and FCS programs. Earlier in the transfer window, starting quarterback Clifton McDowell also departed, leaving a significant impact on the team’s lineup.

As the offseason progresses, the Grizzlies’ coaching staff will need to navigate these changes and reinforce their roster ahead of the next season.
