Montana Officials’ Association Announces Hall of Fame Induction

HELENA — The Montana Officials’ Association (MOA) will honor four distinguished members by inducting them into its Hall of Fame, as announced by Brian Michelotti, Executive Director of the Montana High School Association. The new inductees are Bruce Shipp of Miles City, Bryan "Porchy" Porch from Missoula, James "Ned" Ellingwood of Butte, and Bozeman’s Steve Johnson. Collectively, these officials boast over 160 years of officiating experience in Montana.

Bruce Shipp (Miles City) officiated basketball and football for 34 years and has been recognized for his excellence, being named Montana’s Boys Basketball and Football Official of the Year. His career included officiating state championship games in both sports and mentoring upcoming referees as Regional Director for Miles City.

Bryan Porch (Missoula) dedicated over 40 years to officiating boys and girls basketball, alongside an impressive stint officiating at the collegiate level. Known for his supportive nature, Porch has mentored new officials and served in various leadership roles, contributing significantly to the officiating community.

James "Ned" Ellingwood (Butte) began his career at 17 and amassed notable achievements in football and fast-pitch softball over 45 years. His extensive experience led to officiating numerous state championship games and serving in leadership positions within the MOA, leaving a lasting legacy on Montana’s high school sports landscape.

Steve Johnson (Bozeman), a veteran of 43 years, officiated 46 playoff games and nine state championships in football. Beyond officiating, he has held prominent community service roles and garnered numerous accolades for his humanitarian efforts, underlining his commitment to both athletics and community.

These remarkable officials exemplify dedication and service to Montana sports, inspiring future generations in the field.
