Montana State’s Rob McManus Qualifies for NCAA Steeplechase Finals
EUGENE, Ore. — Rob McManus, a senior track athlete from Montana State University, showcased his resilience at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday. Competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, McManus clocked a time of 8:34.54, securing fourth place in his semifinal heat and earning a spot in the finals. His performance keeps the tradition of excellence, often referred to as "SteepleU," alive at MSU.
In a dramatic turn of events, McManus fell during the final water jump but managed to recover swiftly to qualify for Friday’s final, set for 6:34 p.m. Mountain Time. A three-time All-American, this is McManus’s third consecutive year at the NCAA outdoor championships. After finishing 16th in 2023 and narrowly missing the finals with a 13th place finish in 2024, he looks to make a significant impact this time around.
Iowa State’s Joash Ruto recorded the day’s fastest time, finishing his heat in 8:22.94.
Meanwhile, fellow MSU competitor Harvey Cramb faced tougher luck in the 1,500 meters, finishing 12th in his heat with a time of 3:44.57. Despite his challenging performance, Cramb, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, made his NCAA outdoor championship debut after winning the Big Sky championship in the same event in May.
Montana State’s participation in the NCAA meet continues, with Hailey Coey competing in the long jump finals at 6:40 p.m. and the women’s 4×400-meter relay team set to race in the prelims at 8:36 p.m. Mountain Time. As the championships unfold, MSU remains a strong contender to watch in various events.
