Press Release: DJ Broome Takes Helm as Head Coach at Cal Poly Humboldt
MISSOULA – DJ Broome, assistant coach for the Montana men’s basketball team, has departed the program to assume the role of head coach at Cal Poly Humboldt, his alma mater. Broome’s appointment, announced by athletic director Nick Pettit, is seen as a homecoming for the former Lumberjack who has demonstrated a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence.
Over his four seasons with the Grizzlies, Broome contributed to their successful campaign, which included a Big Sky Conference regular season title and a league tournament championship, leading the team to the NCAA tournament. He served as the director of student-athlete development prior to his role as assistant coach.
Montana head coach Travis DeCuire commended Broome, expressing excitement for both the coach and his new position. "We will miss him but will be rooting for him in his next chapter," DeCuire stated.
Broome’s experience at Cal Poly Humboldt spans both playing and coaching, having been a team captain during his time there from 2008 to 2012. Reflecting on the opportunity, he said, "This opportunity at Cal Poly Humboldt is a dream come true for me," and expressed gratitude for the community’s support.
The move leaves the University of Montana looking to fill two of its five assistant coaching positions for next season, following the earlier departure of Anderson Clarke to High Point.
In other athletic news, Montana men’s tennis coach Jason Brown was honored as the Mountain Region coach of the year, while standout player Tom Bittner was named the Mountain Region player to watch, marking a significant achievement for the program. Meanwhile, former Grizzly wide receiver Keelan White made his CFL debut with the Ottawa Redblacks, recording four catches in his first game.
This significant shift within UM’s athletic programs is expected to bring new challenges and opportunities as the season progresses.
