Crow Tribe Celebrates 200 Years Since Treaty with U.S.

BILLINGS, Mont. – Crow tribal members are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the 1825 treaty with the U.S. government during the Spirit of the Crow Warrior Gathering this week. The event features illuminated tipis on federal land, symbolizing the rich history shared between the Crow Nation and the surrounding community.

Local officials, including Mayor Bill Cole and Senator Glenn Plenty Hawk, acknowledged the gathering’s significance and encouraged residents to observe the illuminated tipis near the Phillips 66 refinery. “It’s a great place to learn about the history of our valley and the Crow Indians,” Mayor Cole noted.

Sampson DeCrane, a health planner for the Crow Tribal Health Department, reflected on the challenges the tribe has faced over the past two centuries, emphasizing ongoing issues like addiction and economic struggles. DeCrane called for community support, urging individuals to reach out in times of distress.

Moreover, Mayor Cole highlighted the need for greater Native American representation in the police force, noting that while Native Americans comprise 7% of Billings’ population, they account for 30% of crime.

As the community gears up for the upcoming Crow Fair, which attracts over 20,000 visitors, the gathering serves as both a remembrance of the past and a call to action for the future. Everyone is invited to participate in the festivities and connect with the local culture.
