Safety Concerns Emerge from Wildlife Incidents in Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks

Press Release

Bison Incident at Yellowstone; Glacier National Park Faces Bear Issues and New Regulations

Yellowstone National Park, WY – In a troubling recurrence, a visitor was gored by a bison for the second time this year while in a group at the Upper Geyser Basin. Rangers confirmed the individual sustained minor injuries, receiving on-site treatment before being transported for further care.

Meanwhile, in Glacier National Park, officials were forced to destroy a black bear after it became food-conditioned and broke into buildings and cars. This four-year-old bear had been previously relocated but returned to West Glacier, prompting safety concerns. In addition to wildlife challenges, the park announced the full opening of the Going-to-the-Sun Road for hiker-biker access, though sections had to close temporarily due to bear interactions.

Starting this week, Glacier will implement a timed vehicle registration system aimed at alleviating traffic congestion during the summer season. Reservations will be necessary for entry between 7 AM and 3 PM, though visitors can enter without one after that.

As search efforts continue for a missing hiker near Red Lodge and firefighting crews manage a blaze north of Helena, local authorities remain vigilant in ensuring visitor safety and park operations.
