Update: Hilger Valley Fire Continues to Grow Near Helena

Helena, MT – As of 6:43 p.m. on June 9, 2025, the Hilger Valley Fire has expanded to more than 300 acres, prompting an extensive firefighting response. Firefighting resources now include three Type 2 helicopters, a hand crew, three large air tankers, one very large air tanker, and multiple fire engines. Currently, there is no containment for the fire.

The Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation (DNRC) and local firefighters were quick to respond to the blaze, which ignited approximately 20 miles north of Helena, near the Gates of the Mountains exit off Interstate 15. Initial reports indicated the fire burned roughly 20 acres by 3:30 p.m., but the situation escalated rapidly.

Authorities are urging caution in the area, as numerous firefighting vehicles and personnel are present. Despite the fire’s rapid growth, there have been no reports of homes or structures being directly threatened. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Travelers in the vicinity are advised to exercise caution due to increased fire apparatus on the roads. The local 911 Center continues to provide updates, and residents may expect further information as firefighting efforts progress.
