Kalispell City Council Considers Hazard Mitigation Plan in Work Session

Kalispell City Council to Discuss Hazard Mitigation Plan

Kalispell City Council will convene on June 9 at 7 p.m. at City Hall to revisit a state-approved hazard mitigation plan that was postponed for further review. The 2024 Western Montana Region Hazard Mitigation Plan aims to provide a comprehensive policy framework to identify and mitigate long-term risks associated with disasters and natural events throughout Montana.

The development of the Flathead County portion of the plan, initiated in 2022, received approval from state authorities and the Federal Emergency Management Agency earlier this year. During a previous meeting in April, Councilor Sid Daoud advocated for delaying the vote to allow Council members more time to review the extensive 500-page document.

Other municipalities, including Flathead County, Columbia Falls, and Whitefish, have already adopted the plan, which could open grant opportunities for hazard mitigation projects in 2025. City Manager Doug Russell noted that Kalispell currently lacks any pending hazard mitigation projects. The Council’s decision on the plan is essential to enhance the city’s disaster preparedness and resilience strategies.
