First-Year Umpire Jason Hardy Embraces the Challenge of Officiating High School Baseball
BILLINGS — First-year umpire Jason Hardy is dedicated to calling the balls and strikes in high school baseball, a role often overlooked yet crucial. “I love the sport, and the kids deserve a fair game,” Hardy explained. “This is how I stay engaged.”
Longtime umpire Craig Berube, who leads the Billings officials, praised Hardy, acknowledging that while he has areas to improve, his passion for the game is vital. “Enjoying what you do is the biggest thing in officiating,” Berube noted.
With the growth of high school baseball in Montana, particularly around Billings, the demand for umpires has surged, presenting challenges for many. Most umpires balance officiating with other jobs, complicating their schedules. “We sometimes have to contact schools to adjust game times,” Hardy said, highlighting the difficulty of managing commitments alongside family time.
The varied game schedules, from morning to evening, further strain officials. “It can really be a stretch covering them,” Berube explained, referring to the need to leave work early to meet game times. However, Hardy finds the effort rewarding, especially when it means allowing the kids to compete.
Having previously officiated football in Oklahoma, Hardy appreciates Montana’s more favorable baseball climate. He advises newcomers on the importance of staying hydrated during games, saying, “Whatever you think is enough hydration, double it.”
Though umpires are often unsung heroes in high school athletics, Hardy’s commitment and enthusiasm play a vital role in keeping the spirit of the game alive. As he embarks on his officiating journey, both he and Berube emphasize that without officials, the game simply cannot continue.
