Fort Missoula Native Plant Garden Seeks Summer Volunteers

MISSOULA — The Fort Missoula Native Plant Garden is inviting community members to volunteer this summer. Every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., individuals can lend a hand in weeding, learn about native plants, and foster community ties. "It’s just relaxing to listen to the birds and spend your morning here,” said Elena Ulev, the garden manager, emphasizing the need for more helpers.

Managed by the Montana Natural History Center, the garden features a variety of native Montana plants, perfectly suited to local ecosystems. Currently, blooming species include penstemon, blanket flower, and lupine, making it an ideal time for visits or volunteering.

Volunteers do not need prior gardening experience or tools; simply bring a water bottle and a willingness to learn. Ulev offers snacks and valuable insights about the plants, creating a friendly atmosphere for newcomers and returning volunteers alike.

In addition to volunteer opportunities, the garden hosts several events this summer, including a focus on native shrubs and celebrations for National Pollinator Week. For more details, visit the Montana Natural History Center’s website.

Join the effort to enhance Missoula’s green spaces and meet new friends!
