California Governor Gavin Newsom Undeterred by Arrest Threats from Trump Administration Official

California Governor Gavin Newsom defiantly responded to threats of arrest from Trump administration officials amid clashes between law enforcement and protesters over immigration raids in Los Angeles. Tom Homan, Trump’s “border czar,” warned that federal immigration operations would persist in the city, even as Democratic leaders expressed concerns about escalating tensions. Homan threatened that anyone obstructing immigration enforcement, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, could face felony charges, but acknowledged neither had crossed a line yet.

In a spirited interview, Newsom challenged Homan to follow through with his threat, sarcastically urging him to “just get it over with.” He criticized the “bloviating” of federal officials, while Bass dismissed Homan’s comments as unnecessary, noting that she had communicated with him and had no intention of escalating tensions with the federal government.

Trump supported Homan’s threats, suggesting that officials who obstruct federal authority would face legal consequences. However, Newsom indicated that during a recent call with Trump, immigration issues were barely mentioned, asserting that they had a constructive discussion.

Both Newsom and Bass criticized Trump’s decision to deploy at least 2,000 National Guard troops to the area, claiming it would only heighten tensions. In a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Newsom requested the troops be returned to state control, emphasizing that state and local authorities are better positioned to manage such dynamic situations.

The threats of arrest against elected officials have become common in Trump’s administration, following past incidents involving local leaders protesting federal actions, highlighting a significant friction between state and federal authorities over immigration policies.
