Tombstone Vandalized for the Third Time at Red Lodge Cemetery
RED LODGE — A tombstone at the Red Lodge Cemetery has faced vandalism for the third time, prompting an investigation by the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office. Caretakers discovered the damage on Thursday, noting that only this specific grave has been targeted. According to Jim Hilderman, treasurer of the Carbon County Cemetery District #8 Board, a private investigator has been hired to look into the ongoing issue.
Hilderman emphasized the tombstone’s vulnerable location, stating it sits at a corner of the cemetery, requiring intent to damage. The vandalism likely occurred late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, as cemetery staff routinely patrol for suspicious activities. Efforts to repair the tombstone were made, yet parts remain damaged.
The tombstone honors a deceased mother from 2006, and Hilderman believes the repeated vandalism is targeted. He expressed outrage over the situation but remains determined to identify the responsible party. Notably, the financial burden of repairs has fallen on the affected family, well-known within the Red Lodge community. Hilderman has urged residents to help in uncovering the truth, emphasizing the cemetery’s significance as sacred ground for the community.
