Community Response to New Legislative Changes in Montana

Communities across Montana are engaging with new policies resulting from the 2025 Legislative Session, which aim to streamline local governance. A recent presentation in Hamilton highlighted a bill that has resonated particularly well with Stevensville residents, who applauded its benefits. “Stevensville loves this bill,” a local resident exclaimed, noting its effectiveness in resolving a critical issue related to the town’s water system.

Rep. Greg Overstreet of Stevensville emphasized the importance of this legislation, which simplifies the process for adding new wells, thereby removing barriers to development caused by a previously lengthy state approval process.

The Montana League of Cities and Towns is actively touring the state this summer to help localities grasp the implications of such policies. Executive Director Kelly Lynch underscored the League’s mission to support local decision-making on crucial issues such as housing, healthcare, and property taxes, regardless of a community’s size.

She hopes the educational summits, ongoing until the end of July, will empower municipalities to tailor regulations that reflect their unique needs. For more information on upcoming summits, residents are encouraged to stay informed.
