GREAT FALLS — Beartooth Elementary’s Darla Stone Honored as 2025 Centennial Bell Montana History Teacher of the Year
Darla Stone, a dedicated fourth-grade teacher from Beartooth Elementary School in Billings, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Centennial Bell Montana History Teacher of the Year Award. Unanimously selected by the nominating committee, Stone’s recognition stems from her commitment to integrating Indian Education for All (IEFA) into her curriculum and her significant contributions to her students, community, and the education profession.
Principal Travis Niemeyer praised Stone’s innovative approach, stating, “Mrs. Stone’s teaching makes history accessible and inspiring.” He highlighted her ability to connect past events with present realities, particularly regarding Montana’s indigenous peoples, enhancing her students’ understanding of their own histories.
With nine years of teaching experience at Beartooth Elementary, Stone expresses a passion for engaging her students in Montana’s unique narratives. “Teaching Montana History is one of my favorite parts of the year,” said Stone. She values the natural curiosity of fourth graders, believing it is the perfect age to explore the state’s rich and diverse history.
Beyond her classroom, Stone actively collaborates with the Billings Public Schools Indigenous Education Department and presents at educational conferences. Her involvement extends to advising the Billings Student Tribal Council, working to incorporate authentic indigenous perspectives into her teachings. “Ultimately, I want students to feel empowered by their understanding of history,” she remarked.
Stone will receive $4,250 to enhance her classroom experience, thanks to sponsors including the Montana Television Network and the Virginia City Preservation Alliance. As a highlight of the award, Stone and her students will ring the Centennial Bell on November 7, commemorating Montana’s statehood on November 8, 1889, as part of the 36th Montana Statehood Centennial Bell celebration.
