Grizzly Bear Encounter Near Condon Sparks Safety Alert for Montana Residents

KALISPELL, Mont. – A recent encounter with a grizzly bear near Condon on June 3 has heightened awareness around wildlife safety for both residents and visitors in Montana. A landowner, responding to disturbances among his livestock, was charged by the bear but successfully defended himself, shooting and killing the animal without sustaining injuries.

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (DFWP) has issued a warning following the incident, emphasizing the growing density of grizzly bear populations in the region. “Montana is bear country,” stated DFWP officials, noting that encounters are becoming increasingly common as bears expand their ranges.

In response, the DFWP has advised the public on precautions, including carrying bear spray, traveling in groups, and avoiding animal carcasses. Residents are reminded to secure garbage, bird feeders, and pet food indoors while refraining from feeding wildlife to minimize potential bear conflicts.

“If you encounter a bear, never approach it and leave the area when it is safe to do so,” the DFWP cautioned. These proactive measures are essential for coexistence in bear-populated areas.
