Public Outcry Delays T-Mobile Tower Approval in Ravalli County
Hamilton, MT – Ravalli County Commissioners have postponed their decision on a proposed 180-foot-tall T-Mobile wireless communications tower following significant community opposition. Over 60 residents attended the June 3 meeting to express their concerns, prompting a hard public comment cutoff set for June 13. The initial application by Vertical Bridge, tentatively approved by the Planning Board, faced substantial backlash during a contentious public hearing on April 11, continuing to the June review.
The concerns raised were extensive, covering potential wildfire risks, health issues, visual impact, and property value declines. A detailed 38-page memorandum of opposition submitted by local residents underscored these worries, questioning the need for the tower in light of another facility less than a mile away, which violates county spacing regulations.
Residents criticized a visual simulation test conducted earlier, claiming it inadequately represented the tower’s visual impact. Some, like resident Steve Blain, are now pursuing a Citizens Initiated Zoning District to safeguard their properties. The next discussion regarding the tower is scheduled before July 31, as commissioners seek legal review of the criticisms presented.
