Missoula City Council Defies State Law, Adopts Pride Flag as Official City Flag
MISSOULA, MT — In a landmark decision, the Missoula City Council has adopted the Pride flag as the official city flag, allowing it to be flown in schools and government buildings despite a recently passed Montana law aimed at banning such displays. This law, House Bill 819, was intended to eliminate the Pride flag from public spaces, but the council’s vote has reopened the debate over the visibility and representation of LGBTQ+ communities.
Governor Greg Gianforte criticized the council’s resolution, asserting that the decision reflects misplaced priorities at a time when the city should be addressing issues like housing affordability and tax increases. "Nine members of the Missoula City Council made clear their top priority is flying a divisive pride flag," he stated.
Two council members, Bob Campbell and Sandra Vasecka, voted against the resolution. They expressed concerns over the role of government in symbolically supporting specific social issues, advocating instead for neutrality to maintain public trust.
Conversely, supporters of the resolution, including council members Mirtha Becerra and Jennifer Savage, argued that the state law unfairly targeted the LGBTQ+ community. Savage shared the personal significance of the decision, citing her own experiences as a mother of a queer child.
Mayor Andrea Davis echoed this sentiment, stating that the law "picked winners and losers" within the community, further marginalizing certain groups. She indicated that lawmakers may revisit the issue in the upcoming 2027 legislative session, as tensions over representation and inclusion continue to rise.
