Billings Chamber of Commerce Hosts Annual Agricultural Tour
BILLINGS — Spanning over 1.6 million acres, Yellowstone County is predominantly farmland, yet much of this agricultural essence is often concealed beneath Billings’ urban landscape. On Thursday, the Billings Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee, led by Chairman Alex Schimke, hosted a sold-out agricultural tour, taking 65 participants beyond city limits to explore the rural heart of Montana.
The day-long tour not only facilitated professional networking but also provided a unique glimpse into the operations crucial for local food production. “We’re fortunate to live in Montana, where a short drive from any city lands you in agricultural territory,” Schimke noted, emphasizing the importance of bridging the knowledge gap for attendees.
A standout stop was Carbon County Meats, a USDA-inspected processing facility. Owner Shane Giovetti highlighted the rigorous regulations within meat production, stating, “The depth of it is pretty surprising to most people.” He believes that such tours are vital for fostering trust and awareness about locally produced goods.
As awareness about agriculture grows, events like these showcase the essential role of rural operations in sustaining communities, highlighting the need for education around local food systems.
