Banana Lake Fire Near Plains Grows to 850 Acres; No Evacuations Ordered
PLAIN, MT – The Banana Lake Fire, which ignited Saturday afternoon, has escalated to 850 acres as of this evening, according to the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). The fire is located four miles north of Plains, near the Locust Hill Lane area, close to Montana Highway 28.
Though the fire has expanded, officials have not issued any evacuation orders. The DNRC reported moderate fire behavior overnight, characterized by frequent torching and spotting as temperatures rise during the day. To combat the blaze, multiple firefighting resources have been deployed, including nine agency engines, two helicopters, two Type 2 Hand Crews, and a Type 1 Hotshot crew, totaling over 100 personnel working on the ground.
An Incident Management Type 3 Team has been ordered and is expected to arrive Sunday evening, with operations set to continue into Monday. The Plains-Paradise Rural Fire District (PPRFD) has been actively patrolling the area to provide structure protection since late Saturday night, and additional support has come from local firefighting agencies, including Hot Springs Fire and St. Regis Fire.
Highway 28 has reopened at its junctions with Highways 200 and 382, but officials urge drivers to exercise caution as emergency vehicles and fire crews are still active in the vicinity. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Residents and visitors are reminded to stay informed about fire conditions and to heed local updates.
