Elephant Art Installation Fuels Dialogue at Blackfeet Iinnii Days

Elephants and Buffalo Unite at Browning’s Iinnii Days

Browning, MT – This year’s annual Iinnii Days celebrated a unique convergence of cultures with an art installation featuring majestic elephants and American buffalo. The Great Elephant Migration, a striking exhibit comprised of life-sized elephant sculptures crafted from invasive lantana weed, is created by The Real Elephant Collective, which includes 200 Indigenous artisans from southern India’s Nilgiri Biosphere.

Feh Tarty, chairman of Elephant Family USA, explained that the exhibit highlights the plight of elephants whose natural habitat is threatened by the invasive plant. "These sculptures are a way for Indigenous people to engage with nature and raise awareness," he stated. The artwork has drawn significant attention, captivating locals and visitors alike as they interact with the impressive installations against the stunning backdrop of the Rocky Mountain Front.

The elephants, symbolizing matriarchal keystone species, resonate with the Blackfeet culture, sparking deeper conversations about wildlife relationships and environmental stewardship. Students from Browning Elementary, like William, expressed excitement, noting the sculptures’ grandeur.

After Iinnii Days, the elephant sculptures will remain visible until June 16, following a tour across major U.S. cities, culminating in Los Angeles. This artistic initiative not only aims to conserve wildlife but also fosters cultural connections across diverse communities.
