Pride Flag Designated as Missoula’s Official Flag

Missoula City Council Declares Pride Flag as Official City Flag Amid Controversy

Missoula, MT – June 2, 2025 – In a bold move, the Missoula City Council has officially adopted the Pride flag as the only flag of the city, a decision that comes in response to a newly enacted Montana law banning Pride flags from being displayed in government buildings and public schools.

The law, known as HB 819, allows for the flying of "official historical flags of the United States." During the council discussions, concerns arose about the law’s vague wording, with Council member Mike Nugent citing the potential inclusion of the Confederate flag as a historical flag under the same definition. Proponents of the resolution argued passionately that the Pride flag is also a significant historical symbol.

Montana Representative Melody Cunningham, a supporter of the resolution, emphasized the importance of recognizing the Pride flag as a historical flag deserving of representation. She stated, “We argued vociferously that the Pride flag was certainly a historical flag and that it was very important.”

The passage of the resolution permits the Pride flag to be flown in all city government facilities and schools. City Attorney Ryan Sudbury explained that the legislation did not explicitly prohibit the adoption of flags expressing political viewpoints, allowing Missoula to interpret the law in favor of inclusivity.

Public response during the council meeting featured strong support, with community members sharing personal testimonies about the positive impact the flag could have on LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance. However, the decision sparked dissent among some residents and council members, who argued that the resolution reflects a political bias.

Despite the divided opinions, the swift action demonstrates Missoula’s commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, standing as a beacon of pride against legislative adversity.
