Flag Football Takes Off in Great Falls: New NFL League Launches
GREAT FALLS — A new NFL Flag football league has sprung up in Great Falls, signaling a rapid growth in popularity for the sport. The initiative originated with Mitchell Morris, who was inspired by a successful flag football program in Eugene, Oregon, before moving back to Montana. Seeing a gap in local offerings, he sought to create a similar program.
During the season, Morris collaborated with fellow parents George Fontanez and Zack Ringler, who both expressed interest in helping to lead the league. “We want to provide more opportunities for kids to play,” said Ringler, emphasizing their goal to make football as accessible as other sports like soccer and basketball.
The league aims to develop a nearly year-round program that includes a range of participants, including girls. “With girls’ flag football becoming a high school sport, it’s crucial to create equal opportunities,” Fontanez noted. An upcoming adult league is also set to commence, spearheaded by Trent Jones from Malmstrom Air Force Base, fostering relationships between military and civilian communities.
To celebrate the conclusion of the spring season, a championship tournament will be held at Memorial Stadium, featuring super bowl-style rings for the winners. “It’s going to be a fantastic event,” Ringler promised.
The new league reflects a growing trend across the nation, with increasing participation rates, particularly among girls, and aims to establish a lasting and vibrant football community in Great Falls.
