HELENA, MT — A recent report from the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services reveals that Montana has the sixth-highest firearm-related death rate in the U.S. This alarming statistic underscores the importance of ensuring firearms are stored safely. In response, the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Firearm Industry Trade Association has launched ‘Gun Storage Check Week’, an initiative aimed at encouraging gun owners to reassess their firearm safety practices.
Ed Beall, a shareholder for Capital Sports, emphasizes the significance of this initiative saying, "You can’t call a bullet back." Once a firearm is discharged, the consequences can be irreversible. During this dedicated week, gun owners are urged to inspect their safes, lock boxes, and cable locks to enhance safety measures.
The report highlights critical issues beyond just child safety; it indicates that firearms are involved in 63% of all suicides in Montana, with a gun-related suicide occurring every 54 hours. Beall encourages gun owners to engage in meaningful discussions about firearm safety, stating, "Have a brave conversation." Addressing mental health and well-being among peers can be vital in preventing tragic outcomes.
As part of the initiative, gun owners are reminded to treat every firearm as if it were loaded and to keep fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot. This campaign will be repeated during National Suicide Prevention Month in September, emphasizing a continued commitment to firearm safety and mental health awareness.
