"Dance Moms" star Abby Lee Miller has filed a lawsuit against Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and two physicians, alleging medical malpractice, professional negligence, and medical battery. The 59-year-old Miller claims that a catheter was left inside her abdomen following spinal surgery in 2020. She is seeking nearly $1.5 million in damages.
Miller’s attorney, Nadine Lewis, stated that despite her years of suffering from chronic pain due to the catheter, doctors failed to order any imaging to diagnose the problem. Miller, who is paraplegic, alleges that her complaints were systematically dismissed by various physicians, which led to prolonged suffering. By March 2024, she reported her pain escalating into debilitating discomfort that significantly affected her daily life.
In June 2024, while receiving treatment for an unrelated issue at another hospital, a CT scan confirmed the presence of the foreign object, leading to its eventual surgical removal. Lewis emphasized that Miller’s case highlights a broader issue regarding the dismissal of women’s pain by medical professionals.
Cedars-Sinai stated that it cannot comment on pending legal matters or specific patient cases due to privacy laws, but reaffirmed its commitment to patient care and safety. The individual doctors named in the suit, Dr. Hooman Melamed and Dr. Paul Dwan, did not respond to requests for comment.
Miller previously garnered media attention in 2017 when she was sentenced to a year in federal prison for bankruptcy-related crimes. This lawsuit furthers the public’s focus on the need for careful attention to women’s health concerns.
