Missoula City Council Approves Pride Flag as the Official City Flag

Missoula City Council Officially Adopts Pride Flag Amid Legislative Challenges

MISSOULA, MT – During a city council meeting on Monday, the Missoula City Council made a landmark decision to officially adopt the Pride flag as the city’s only official flag, counteracting a recent Montana law prohibiting the display of Pride flags in government buildings and schools. House Bill 819 allows for "official historical flags of the United States,” prompting discussions about what constitutes a historical flag.

Council member Mike Nugent highlighted that under this definition, the Confederate flag could also be deemed a historical flag. Supporters of the resolution asserted that the Pride flag, along with its variations, holds equal historical significance. State Representative Melody Cunningham, a Missoula Democrat, emphasized that the Pride flag is indeed a vital part of history and deserves recognition.

The council’s resolution declares the Pride flag an official municipal flag, making it permissible to display in government facilities. City attorney Ryan Sudbury pointed out the ambiguity in HB 819 regarding what an "official flag" entails, allowing for this interpretation.

Community members showed overwhelming support for the resolution during public comments. One resident expressed how important such symbols can be for marginalized groups, recounting their own struggles with acceptance. Another voiced pride in the swift community response to recent legislative actions that threatened the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community.

Though the resolution faced some opposition, with critics arguing it takes a political stance, the council approved it, reinforcing Missoula’s commitment to inclusivity. In addition to adopting the Pride flag, the council also voted to increase parking violation fees for repeat offenders.

The decision reflects a broader commitment to affirming diversity and representation within the community.
