Leaders Gear Up for a Possibly Intense Fire Season in Montana

Montana Prepares for Active Fire Season Amid Drought Concerns

Helena – As emergency crews combat wildfires in western Montana, officials brace for a potentially intense fire season. During Gov. Greg Gianforte’s annual fire season briefing, meteorologist Dan Borsum highlighted increased fire risks due to lingering drought conditions and predictions of hotter, drier July and August. After three years of relatively low fire activity, with 130,000 acres burned in 2022 and 2023, the state faces an uptick, with forecasts suggesting a higher number of wildfires through the summer.

Participants from state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service, emphasized the necessity for quick responses and enhanced forest management. The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) is upgrading its firefighting capabilities by modernizing aerial assets and increasing its personnel, now boasting about 180 frontline firefighters. New legislation has also secured funding for additional resources if needed.

To mitigate fire risks, leaders urged the public to adhere to fire restrictions and prepare properties by clearing flammable materials. For further information on wildfire prevention and current fire conditions, visit DNRC’s MTFireInfo.org website.
