Busy Weekend for Bozeman Democrats Centers on Community Engagement and Political Critique

Bozeman, MT – This past weekend marked an active time for Bozeman Democrats, who hosted a series of events designed to engage local voters and address pressing political issues. Activities included a town hall focused on legislative accomplishments, a meet-and-greet for a new candidate, and a "nonpartisan" town hall that predominantly criticized the Trump administration’s policies.

Political newcomer Russell Cleveland launched his campaign for Montana’s 1st Congressional District at a gathering on Friday, where he expressed a desire to unify Montanans. Wearing a distinctive black tie symbolizing his stance against political extremism, Cleveland articulated his vision for a more inclusive political landscape. With a personal connection to cancer research—stemming from the loss of his daughter to leukemia in 2020—Cleveland emphasized the need for better funding in medical research and support for Medicaid and veteran care.

The weekend’s events also featured a Saturday town hall hosted by scientist Trey Alvey, which, despite its nonpartisan label, largely turned into a forum for expressing dissatisfaction with Republican policies. Alvey criticized absent officials, including Rep. Ryan Zinke and Senators Tim Sheehy and Steve Daines, emphasizing the importance of community resilience in face of political challenges. Local leaders participated, addressing the impact of tariffs and funding cuts on the economy and social services.

As neither the Trump administration nor local Republican representatives participated in the discussion, attendees shared concerns over vital issues affecting residents and businesses in the region.

Moving forward, Cleveland underscored his commitment to becoming an integral part of the community as he immerses himself in the political conversation. Looking ahead, another town hall hosted by local Republicans is scheduled for Tuesday, focusing on public safety, with a “no media” policy, emphasizing the often controlled nature of political discourse.
