Local Wildlife Manager Releases Book Sharing 42 Years of Unique Experiences
Valier, MT – Mike Hoggan, a veteran of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services Program, is set to share his remarkable four-decade journey in wildlife management with the release of his new book, Between Predator and Prey: Forty Two Years as a Government Hunter. With over 42 years dedicated to working alongside sheep ranchers and managing predator populations, Hoggan offers a unique perspective on wildlife challenges in the Rocky Mountain region.
In an interview with Tim McGonigal of the Montana Ag Network, Hoggan reflected on his experiences, emphasizing the distinctive situations he faced. "The Rocky Mountain Front is unique. I don’t think anybody dealt with what I dealt with up here. You got it all. You got the grizzly bears, mountain lions, and the wolves," he noted.
The book captures a collection of both humorous and intense stories from his career, spanning from Nevada to Montana’s rugged landscapes. Readers can expect to find gripping tales, such as investigating cattle mutilations, tracking notorious grizzly bears, and chasing cunning coyotes from helicopters.
Hoggan’s work has not only contributed to wildlife management but has also provided insights into the often misunderstood interactions between humans and wildlife. The rich narratives aim to foster a better understanding of these ecosystems and the vital role wildlife services play in maintaining them.
The release of Between Predator and Prey promises to resonate with readers interested in the complexities of wildlife management and the bonds formed between those who serve in this unique field.
