Press Release: Wildlife Manager Mike Hoggan Publishes Book Sharing Four Decades of Experience
Valier, MT—After over 42 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services Program, Mike Hoggan has released a new book, “Between Predator & Prey: Forty-Two Years a Government Hunter,” recounting his rich experiences in wildlife management. His career covered everything from coyotes to grizzly bears, during which he helped livestock ranchers mitigate predator-related losses.
In an engaging conversation with Tim McGonigal of the Montana Ag Network, Hoggan shares the challenges and triumphs he faced while working alongside ranchers like 73-year-old Karl Rappold. Rappold, who has spent his life ranching near DuPuyer, highlights the invaluable role Hoggan played in preserving their livestock. "Mike became a friend," Rappold says, emphasizing the trust he had in Hoggan’s expertise and dedication.
Hoggan began his journey in 1978 on a Nevada sheep ranch. His firsthand encounters with coyotes and the work of government trappers inspired him to enter the field. Over the years, he not only relocated predators but also made significant contributions to wildlife recovery, including grizzly bear management.
The book features around 30 chapters filled with both humorous and alarming anecdotes, along with insights into wildlife ethics. One of Hoggan’s notable contributions has been developing a humane trap, the Select-A-Catch, which was created to minimize harm to captured animals—a testament to his commitment to both ranchers and wildlife.
Since retiring in 2020, Hoggan has transitioned to running a sheep operation with his wife, Maureen, who assisted with the artwork and marketing of the book. “Between Predator & Prey” is available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble in Great Falls, offering a unique perspective on wildlife management and community service that resonates deeply with both ranchers and conservationists alike.
