Morehead State Football Faces Tough Loss Against No. 8 Montana
Morehead, KY – September 14, 2024
In a challenging matchup, Morehead State University (MSU) suffered a heavy defeat against the eighth-ranked Montana Grizzlies, falling 59-2 at Washington-Grizzly Stadium on Saturday. This loss brings the Eagles’ record to 1-2.
Despite the overwhelming score, there were some highlights for the Eagles. Defensive back Richard Sweeney III made a significant play by intercepting a pass and returning a blocked PAT for a defensive conversion, securing MSU’s only points of the game. The block was executed by defensive lineman Gabe Whittington.
MSU struggled offensively, ultimately finishing with just 45 total yards compared to Montana’s impressive 576. The Eagles’ rushing game was stifled, recording a historic low of negative-14 yards—a program record. Montana’s defense was relentless, registering five sacks and delivering eight tackles for loss.
The Grizzlies, scoring on eight of their 13 drives and adding a field goal, dominated the game from start to finish. Notable performances included Malae Fonoti from Montana, who was the standout player with 175 rushing yards and a touchdown.
On the defensive side for the Eagles, safety Matthew McClelland maintained his status as a key player with a game-high 11 tackles, joined by Mateo Reyes, who also recorded 11 tackles in his career-high performance.
Quarterback Connor Genal threw an interception, but Sweeney’s interception helped maintain MSU’s impressive turnover margin of +6, the best in the FCS level.
Looking ahead, the Eagles will aim to bounce back as they face Eastern Kentucky next Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
