Press Release: 18-Year-Old Sentenced in Rocky Mountain College Football Player’s Death
Billings, MT – An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison related to the fatal shooting of Chandler Stalcup, a Rocky Mountain College football player. Garrett Door III received his sentence on Monday, where Yellowstone County District Judge Thomas Pardy also suspended 10 years of the sentence. Door was convicted of deliberate homicide by accountability.
The incident occurred on October 28, 2023, when Door was behind the wheel of a vehicle. His passenger, Sidney Cruz DeCrane Jr., allegedly fired a shot into another vehicle, striking Stalcup, a freshman football player from Clearwater, Florida, in the head. Stalcup later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
Prosecutors reveal that Stalcup was in the vicinity to pick up a friend from a house party that devolved into a fight. After being knocked out during the tussle, Door and his friends, including DeCrane, sought out the opposing group, presumably for revenge. Tragically, Stalcup was an innocent bystander, unconnected to the altercation.
DeCrane is also facing homicide charges as an adult for his role in the incident. The shooting has left friends and teammates mourning the loss of Stalcup, who was remembered for his spirit and potential on and off the field.
As the community mourns, Rocky Mountain College has held tributes to honor Stalcup, with the college football team reflecting on the impact of the tragedy. The court’s decision aims to serve justice and remind the public of the severe consequences of violence.
