Authorities are investigating how an embalmed infant ended up in a shipment of linens at a Shreveport dry cleaner after employees discovered the mummified baby on Tuesday night. Shreveport police responded to the Alsco Uniforms facility, finding what appeared to be a small, mummified infant wrapped in laundry. Cpl. Chris Bordelon described the scene as disturbing, noting the strong odor of formaldehyde, indicating the infant had been embalmed.
Detectives traced the shipment to Golden Gate Funeral Home in Dallas. The baby had died on May 3, and while a cremation was scheduled for May 17, the remains somehow ended up mixed with laundry destined for Shreveport. Bordelon stated that the incident reflects negligence, although no foul play is suspected. The infant was found clothed with initials “K.M.,” which remains the only identifying information.
The remains have been turned over to the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office, which is working to return the infant to their family in Dallas. Investigators indicated that the Texas Funeral Service Commission has been notified, and the inquiry may extend across state lines due to laws governing the treatment of human remains. Bordelon emphasized the seriousness of the situation, asserting that those responsible for the mishandling could face legal consequences.
He remarked that this unfortunate incident is something no family should endure. Golden Gate Funeral Home declined to comment on the situation when contacted by NBC 5. The violent crimes team is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding this bizarre case.
