Missoula authorities have confirmed the tragic drowning of 41-year-old Vanessa Madel during Memorial Day weekend. Sheriff Jeremiah Petersen reported that the incident occurred while Madel was swimming in the Bitterroot River near Maclay Bridge on May 24.
In public health news, a second case of measles has been reported in Northwest Montana. The Flathead City-County Health Department (FCCHD) announced the new case involves an adult from Flathead County who recently traveled outside of the state. Health officials are investigating the exposure source, noting there is no connection to the earlier reported case. The latest patient is currently isolating at home after a prior hospitalization.
Additionally, the Environmental Protection Agency has allocated $8 million in funding to revitalize Brownfields properties across Montana. The Ravalli County Economic Development Authority (RCEDA) received $1 million to identify and enhance unused contaminated sites, with projects in Hamilton focusing on historic landmarks such as the Hamilton Town Hall and the former fire hall.
