Judge Amy Eddy Commits to Nonpartisan Approach in Montana Supreme Court Campaign

Judge Amy Eddy Enters Montana Supreme Court Race with Nonpartisan Pledge

Flathead County, May 20 – Flathead County District Court Judge Amy Eddy has officially announced her candidacy for the Montana Supreme Court, aiming to fill the vacancy left by retiring Justice Beth Baker. In her May 6 press release, Eddy emphasized her commitment to a nonpartisan campaign, stating, "Montanans deserve a Supreme Court justice who is fair, impartial, and independent."

Eddy’s campaign comes at a time when recent legislative changes have begun to weave politics into judicial contests. A new law, signed by the governor in March, allows political parties to directly contribute to judicial candidates. Eddy, however, maintains her stance against such developments, asserting, "I have no intention of accepting money from any party." She believes that such funding contradicts the independence of the judiciary outlined in the Montana Code of Judicial Conduct.

With 25 years of legal experience, Eddy brings a robust background in the courtroom. After earning her law degree from the University of Montana in 2001, she specialized in civil law and was appointed to Montana’s 11th District Court in 2015. She holds a strong track record, having been reelected multiple times, and has experience overseeing the state’s Asbestos Claims Court, focusing on cases related to hazardous materials.

Eddy’s constitutional philosophy advocates for a balanced interpretation of the law, viewing the Constitution as a living document. Although she refrained from discussing specific issues like abortion or environmental regulation, she acknowledged existing state precedents, asserting that "precedence is a promise of constancy."

Eddy will face fellow District Court Judge Dan Wilson in the upcoming race, positioning her commitment to judicial integrity as a focal point of her campaign.
