Judge Amy Eddy Commits to Avoid Partisan Politics in Montana Supreme Court Campaign

Flathead County Judge Amy Eddy Enters Montana Supreme Court Race

Flathead County District Court Judge Amy Eddy has announced her candidacy for an open seat on the Montana Supreme Court, stressing her commitment to a nonpartisan campaign. In a press release, Eddy stated, "Montanans deserve a Supreme Court justice who is fair, impartial, and independent," pledging to avoid partisan influences in her judicial role. Her campaign seeks to uphold the state’s tradition of nonpartisan judicial elections, even after recent legislation lifted restrictions on political party contributions to judicial candidates.

Eddy expressed her disagreement with this new law, emphasizing her intention not to accept any party funding. “While it may be lawful, it is not judicial…That, to me, does not embody a nonpartisan campaign,” she remarked.

With 25 years of courtroom experience, Eddy graduated from the University of Montana School of Law in 2001. She served as a trial attorney in Kalispell before being appointed to the 11th District Court in 2015. During her tenure, she oversaw the state’s Asbestos Claims Court, focusing on claims tied to an asbestos-contaminated vermiculite mine in Libby, an experience she described as a proud period of her career.

Eddy’s judicial philosophy embraces the concept of judicial restraint while allowing for a flexible interpretation of the Constitution. Paraphrasing Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, she expressed that constitutional law should not be confined solely to its text but should also consider the evolving context of society.

Eddy will face fellow District Court Judge Dan Wilson, who announced his candidacy in April, as both vie for the seat previously held by Justice Beth Baker. Eddy is poised to navigate complex issues facing the Montana Supreme Court, including abortion rights, voters’ rights, and environmental regulations, while maintaining her commitment to precedent and impartiality.
