Federal agents investigating New York City Mayor Eric Adams were actively pursuing evidence just prior to a directive from the Justice Department to drop a corruption case against him. Documents released on Friday reveal that a probe into Adams, which began in August 2021 while he was borough president, included the seizure of his phones and warrants for various searches until a reversal occurred in February 2024.
Initially, Adams faced charges of accepting illicit campaign contributions and free travel linked to influence peddling with a Turkish diplomat. These surfaced publicly in November 2023, with an indictment coming ten months later. However, following the inauguration of President Trump, Justice Department leaders ordered prosecutors to drop the case, suggesting it impeded Adams’ cooperation with federal immigration initiatives, leading to resignations among disgruntled prosecutors.
Despite the dropped charges, investigations were still advancing prior to the halt, with indications that additional charges related to obstruction of justice were imminent. The unsealed documents provided insights into federal searches of locations and electronic devices sought under court authorization. Notably, probes included Adams’ longtime partner’s Fort Lee, New Jersey, home and even his official residence, Gracie Mansion.
Adams’s legal representation criticized the initially filed case but characterized its dismissal as a vindication. While he no longer faces legal battles, Adams aspires for a complex political future, opting to run as an independent in the upcoming November general election, having dismissed participation in the Democratic primary. Adams’ recent meeting with Trump has amplified speculation about their relationship, with discussions centering on infrastructure and social services.
