Miss Montana’s 2025 Smith River Float Lottery: What to Expect in 2026

Prepare for the 2026 Smith River Floating Lottery

For outdoor enthusiasts who missed their chance to float Montana’s stunning Smith River State Park this year, hope is not lost. The Smith River, renowned for its 59 miles of scenic beauty and exceptional fishing through the Little Belt Mountains, provides a remarkable floating experience. However, securing a permit is a challenge—the lottery system, in place since 1990, allows only about 10% of applicants to float each year.

To enter the 2026 lottery, visit the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) website starting January 2. A $10 non-refundable fee grants access to the lottery, with applications accepted until February 15. Winners will be notified by email, and results will also be posted online.

Additionally, FWP offers a Super Permit Lottery, allowing applicants to purchase multiple entries for $5, providing the opportunity to choose a preferred floating date. The float season generally spans mid-April to mid-July.

For those not selected, hiring designated commercial outfitters remains an option, as they are allocated specific permits. Unauthorized commercial services on the river are prohibited, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
