Daines Pushes for Controversial Coal Policies, Puts Montana at Risk

Press Release: Controversy Over Sen. Daines’ Support for Signal Peak Energy

In a contentious move that has raised alarms among environmental advocates and local communities, Sen. Steve Daines is championing legislative efforts to facilitate the expansion of Signal Peak Energy at the Bull Mountains coal mine, despite the company’s troubling history of legal violations and unethical practices.

Two notable bills, S. 239 and S. 362, have come under scrutiny. Bill S. 239 aims to privatize coal sourced from public lands, transferring ownership to a private family trust without any financial compensation. Critics argue that this move contradicts Daines’ previous pledges to protect public lands and misaligns with the narrative of supporting U.S. energy independence, as much of the extracted coal will be exported to foreign markets, including Japan and South Korea.

Meanwhile, bill S. 362 attempts to exempt Signal Peak from thorough environmental reviews, a decision that poses serious risks as the area already suffers from previous mining-related issues, including groundwater depletion and structural damages. The mine’s track record is troubling; it has been fined for bribing injured workers, illegal toxic waste disposal, and numerous environmental violations. Shockingly, the ownership group, Global Mining Holding Company, has its own dubious past, including major fines for bribery and financial misconduct.

Opponents question why Sen. Daines is aligning with a corporation burdened by corruption instead of advocating for sustainable energy initiatives that would benefit Montanans and strengthen the local economy. The senator’s actions suggest a disregard for community welfare, focusing instead on corporate interests.

As calls for accountability grow louder, it becomes increasingly clear: when Sen. Daines shows us who he truly represents, Montanans must take heed.

Erik Nylund, former Natural Resources Liaison for Senator Tester, emphasizes the need for responsible resource development that prioritizes the needs of local communities over corrupt corporate interests.
