Tuesday Election Yields Mixed Outcomes for School and Fire Levies

Missoula Voters Approve Key School District Levies Amid Challenges for Outlying Areas

Missoula, MT – May 9, 2025 – In a recent election, voters in Missoula County demonstrated strong support for local education by approving two of three proposed levies for the Missoula County Public Schools. While the $1 million high school safety levy was rejected for the second year running—receiving 53% "no" votes—the community approved the operational levies for elementary and high school, totaling $384,947 and $164,315, respectively. Superintendent Micah Hill expressed gratitude for the community’s support, though he lamented the failure of the safety levy, which would have bolstered essential security resources.

Most outlying districts faced a different fate, with several operational and safety levies failing. Notably, the East Missoula Rural Fire Department’s proposed levy also did not pass, raising concerns over future operations.

On the election front, incumbents retained their posts on the Missoula school board, while overall voter turnout reached 34.23%. Meanwhile, the Missoula Public Library distributed free gun safety locks for suicide prevention, responding to urgent community needs, and city officials expanded a rebate program for heat pump water heaters following state funding support.

As Missoula prepares for upcoming events and programs, community engagement remains a priority to address both educational and safety needs effectively.
